Police have arrested the husband of one of the two women who were shot to death early Sunday in a DeKalb County home.

Demetrius Russell, 34, was picked up by investigators around 1 p.m. Sunday on Moreland Avenue in DeKalb, said Mekka Parish, a DeKalb police spokeswoman.

By early evening, police had charged him with two counts of murder, though his motive remains unclear.

Russell was separated from Victoria Renfroe, 24, Parish said. She was living at the home on Eastwood Drive, where the slayings occurred, with Andrea Smith, 27.

The women had each been shot multiple times in the torso, Parish said. The spokeswoman could not confirm if any of Renfroe's three children were fathered by Russell.

The Renfroe offspring and Smith's three children were in the Eastwood Drive house at the time of the shootings. The six youngsters fled to neighbors homes. It was not known if any of the children — ranging in age from infancy to 11 years old — helped identify their mother's alleged killer.

They are now staying with relatives, Parish said. She said police had been called to the home in the past for domestic disputes.

Neighbors said the three-bedroom house with tan siding and wood shingles had recently been renovated, and the women hadn't lived there long.

The home was bought in February by G2M Properties Inc., according to DeKalb County tax records. No one answered the phone Sunday at G2M's office in Atlanta.
